Links to Water Management Sites

The quality of the world's drinking water is under ever-increasing threat. Here are just a few of the reasons:

• The world's population is increasing at an alarming rate creating strain on the systems that remove and treat bodily wastes carrying dangerous bacteria such as E.coli 0157:H7.

• More and more chemicals are used on the land as fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides that may find their way into water catchment and storage facilities.

• The reticulation systems of many cities are ageing and prone to breakdown. They were often made of unsuitable materials - lead, asbestos cement, etc. in the first place.

• Some chemicals are deliberately put into the water system to combat the growth of bacteria - chlorine, ammonia, ozone, etc., but which themselves have implications for human health. In addition, other chemicals like flouride are intended to improve health but their use remains controversial.

The following sites are concerned with research into ways to protect and improve our drinking-water quality, monitoring of the quality of supplies, providing drinking water to the consumer, or with broader water environmental issues.
